Department of Labor Apprenticeship Ambassador Recognition Ceremony

At a recent White House ceremony, ANEW was recognized for completing their term as Apprenticeship Ambassador, dedicated to expanding and diversifying Registered Apprenticeships.  This initiative includes key industries that are vital to our local economy, such as construction, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and healthcare.

Our work closely aligns with national efforts to empower underrepresented communities through accessible training and apprenticeship opportunities, while emphasizing the importance of inclusion in the workforce. As ANEW continues to promote skills training and job placement, collaboration with Apprenticeship Ambassadors is crucial to ensuring that our community benefits from this growth.

By actively engaging in this initiative, ANEW is transforming lives and building a stronger, more equitable workforce for our community. Your support and involvement are essential as we work together to create meaningful change.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT:

WA Grant for Apprenticeship

ANEW serves as the Financial Aid Office for the WA Grant for Apprenticeship (WG-A). This is a grant that's open to all registered apprenticeships in the state of Washington who are approved by the WSATC. This financial aid may be available to assist active apprentices with associated costs of their apprenticeships, including tuition, fees, and materials.

In partnership with Construction Center of Excellence and in celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, we are hosting our Fall Inclusion Summit on 11/21 and recognizing industry leaders with an award celebration during lunch. 

We hope that you can attend and join us for a day dedicated to crucial efforts and conversations. We are excited to present workshops and panel discussions such as:

• Learn about Respectful Workplace Initiative with Erin Flynn, PH.D and Emily Huang, PH.D

• Mentorship - A Two-Way Street to Empowerment, panel discussion moderated by Karen Lawton, Superintendent, Turner Construction

• Navigating Critical Conversations, presented by Zachary Florent, U.S. EEOC

• Building Stronger Foundations, a panel discussion moderated by Marianna Hyke, Political Coordinator, Western States Regional Council of Carpenters

Federal Way High School 5-7 PM

Join us at the Build Your Future Trade Skills Expo! DVR, Federal Way Public Schools, and ANEW are here to help you discover how construction trade apprenticeships can unlock exciting career opportunities.

ANEW's Youth Exploration Program will be hosting a booth and working in partnership with DVR. DVR works with students on Individualized Education Plans (IEP), 504 Plans, and students with documented disabilities to offer them access to career pathways in the construction building trades.

Students will have a unique opportunity to be exposed to construction employment, workshops, relevant soft skills, and hands-on construction projects and activities on a strength-based approach.

Tradeswomen Build Nations is the largest national tradeswoman conference and was hosted this year in New Orleans, where over 5,000 Tradeswomen and allies came together to share knowledge, stories, resources, and build a strong sense of community.

The Sellen Subcontractor Giving Campaign

The Sellen Subcontractor Giving Campaign just wrapped up its 3^rd year and has generated more than $95,000 to help people in our community prepare for successful careers with local trade unions. This year, nearly 50 local subcontractors and suppliers contributed to the campaign. Thank you to Sellen and all of our partners for continuing to champion this work!

Build with Pride Seattle Resource Rendezvous Kick-off to Construction Inclusion Week & Built with Pride Scholarship

For Construction Inclusion Week (CIW) 2024, Build with Pride Seattle celebrated their new collaboration with ANEW and GSBA at the Resource Rendezvous! The event kicked off CIW 2024 with a focus on OPPORTUNITY and ACTION, showcasing our commitment to building a more inclusive industry. 

This event was a powerful step toward building a stronger, more inclusive AEC community through impactful charitable partnerships.

The Built With Pride Scholarship, aimed at empowering LGBTQIA+ individuals pursuing careers in the trades, was unveiled during the Resource Rendezvous.  This initiative, created in partnership with ANEW, GSBA, RISEUP, and BuildOUT California will offer financial support and essential services such as childcare, supplies, and housing assistance, breaking down the barriers many in our community face.

RISE Up Program Manager, Thenisia Sullivan, was a panelist on the Navigating Authenticity in the Workplace Panel during the event. She spoke on allyship, what it means when working in the trades, and dove into what it means to be your true authentic self in your workplace.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us to make this event a success! Together, we are expanding the network of resources and support for inclusion initiatives that align with CIW’s mission.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Hally Pridgen

This month we'd like to highlight Hally Pridgen for her efforts as a panelist on the Apprenticeships: Exploring a Career in the Trades Panel during the Life After High School event hosted by Federal Way HS.

She spoke on her experiences changing careers after college, the benefits of apprenticeship programs for people in similar situations, and the importance of diversity and inclusion in the trades.

Hally is currently a student in TRP 125 (womxn only) where she is working towards an apprenticeship.

SUCCESS STORIES

Our pre-apprenticeship programs have transformed the lives of many determined individuals, opening doors to rewarding careers in skilled trades. This month we would like share the stories of a few who have had their paths changed by their time with ANEW.

Simone is now working as a floater with ANEW's Pre-Apprenticeship Training program while she waits to begin her Sheet Metal TAB apprenticeship with Local 66.

Simone Carroll

"Before I came to ANEW, I was one those classic college graduates who was sitting on their degree, trying to find a career path that fits who they are now.

I’ve always had getting into the trades in the back of my mind and decided to take that leap and apply to be an electrician. As all of us here know, becoming an inside wireman apprentice is not easy and the list to get in is loooong. So, at my interview the guys at IBEW told me that ANEW would help me move up the list. I decided to apply a few days later and I’m so glad I did. Going through this program may get me higher on the list, but it’s given me so much more than that.

I’ve learned so much about what my new passions are and about what I’m truly capable of. I am now looking forward to pursuing a career in sheet metal & hvac as well as actually using things I learned in my teaching degree to eventually give back to the trades and teach people like me who want to find their new passion. I want to thank Zaria for giving us the confidence to kill an interview, Sydney for giving us the opportunity to learn new skills and pushing us to put our best work forward, and all the contractors and unions who support us and took the time to show us around their sites and let us figure out where we belong. Thank you."

Caleb Donath

Caleb Donath from PACE 42 went through our program after being 22 months clean and an ex-felon. They earned both perfect attendance and the positive attitude award. They are currently working as a material handler with Ocean Park Mechanical and are in the process of getting into the Pipefitters.

Cade Emerson

Cade Emerson from PACE 44 was also previously incarcerated and looking to make a change from previous jobs that they found themselves in. This student earned both perfect attendance and the positive attitude award. They were picked up soon after graduation and are currently working with the Cement Masons.
